Oxford Blues Metal Detecting Club

 Our Club

The Oxford Blues Metal Detecting Club was formed in the mid 1980’s and today has a full membership of about 100 members.

The Club

We have members from all walks of life including some that have been detecting for many years and have attained a vast knowledge of detecting and its associated activities along with newer members who have joined fairly recently. Two of our key members are pictured below. They are Vicki Ashby our outgoing secretary and Dai Devonald our keen finds identification specialist.

The Site Officer liaises with farmers and landowners in order to organise the sites for digs which we normally hold each weekend. We value our relations with farmers, established over many years and increase our access to land by recommendations and reputation.

The club is proud to cooperate with archaeologists and we work closely with our local Finds Liaison Officer (FLO) for Oxfordshire Dr. Edward Caswell and support archaeological work in the Oxfordshire area with detecting field surveys, detection of metallic objects in excavation trenches and spoil heaps.

The club is entirely non-profit making and proud to support local charities which recently have included the British Legion, Sobell House and Helen and Douglas House hospices along with the Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institute. We are also corporate sponsors of the Oxfordshire Museum at Woodstock.

Our Digs

Weather permitting we have digs most Sundays, or occasionally Saturdays.  Members are given detailed information on the dig and it’s location by email, this information is also published in the members only part of our website.

Our Meetings

We have a very informal meeting once a month where we hold a find of the month competition for coins and artefacts voted for by the members. The winners receive points and a find of the month certificate the following month. The winner with the most points at the end of the year is awarded a trophy to hold for the year.  We hold a monthly raffle with good prizes.  Guest speakers are invited from time to time outside the summer months to give talks on subjects related to our hobby.
